An interesting new rumor has been published by DanielRPK (via WoR) and claims that beloved British filmmaker Edgar Wright is considering a reboot of a cult Disney sci-fi property – Gary Nelson’s 1979 feature “The Black Hole”.

The original, at the time the most expensive film the studio ever made, followed the crew of the space exploration vessel USS Palomino who come into contact with a massive lost ship, the USS Cygnus, which is hovering just outside the gravitational pull of a black hole.

Inside they meet crazed scientist Dr. Hans Reinhardt (Maximilian Schell), the sole human along with many faceless robots aboard a giant ship that he plans on flying into the black hole.

The Palomino’s team (led by Robert Forster and ) soon discover a dark secret about what happened onboard this ship, while realising the scientist has no intention of letting them leave. Anthony Perkins, Ernest Borgnine, Yvette Mimieux and Joseph Bottoms co-starred while Roddy McDowall and Slim Pickens lent their voices.

The film was famously darker and more existential than most Disney fare at the time, and is still seen as something of a curiosity today. Production elements of the movie remain praised, from the design to the visual effects to John Barry’s score.

Wright has previously spoken about his admiration for the film, and the new rumor indicates he’s re-teaming with “Attack the Block” filmmaker and “Lockwood & Co.” creator Joe Cornish to co-write the script. Wright and Cornish previously worked together on the scripts for “The Adventures of Tintin” and “Ant-Man”.

Disney previously attempted a reboot of the property years ago with “Tron: Legacy” and “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski attached – but that version didn’t make it out of development.
