Well, nobody saw this coming! Completely out of nowhere, this morning comes a full trailer for Red Sonja. Samuel Goldwyn Films and Millennium Media dropped the trailer online.
Red Sonja was filmed in late 2022 in Greece and Bulgaria. It is directed by MJ Bassett and stars Matilda Lutz (Revenge) as Sonja. She is joined by Wallis Day as Annisia, Robert Sheehan as Draygan, Michael Bisping as Hawk, Martyn Ford as General Karlak, and Eliza Matengu as Amarak.
In this version, huntress Red Sonja must unite a group of unlikely warriors to face off against the evil tyrant Emperor Draygan and his deadly bride, Dark Annisia.
Luca Pasqualino, Rhona Mitra, and Phillip Winchester round out the cast.
Not Red Sonja
A Red Sonja remake has been in various stages of development for about 15 years, with even Bryan Singer attached at one point. This version is produced by Mark Canton, Courtney Solomon, Luke Lieberman, Les Weldon, Greenstein, Jonathan Yunger, Yariv Lernerl, and Joe Gatta.
The character was created by Robert E. Howard, writer Roy Thomas, and artist Barry Windsor Smith for Marvel Comics in 1973. It was adapted into a 1985 movie directed by Richard Fleischer, and written by Clive Exton and George MacDonald Fraser. It starred Brigitte Nielsen as the title character, with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sandahl Bergman, Paul Smith, and Ronald Lacey in supporting roles.
It was theatrically released in the United States on July 3, 1985, by MGM/UA Entertainment Co. Upon release, the film was a critical and commercial failure, grossing $6.9 million from a budget of $17.9 million.
As in Howard’s Conan, Red Sonja takes place in the Hyborian Age, a fictional prehistoric time previously depicted in the films Conan the Barbarian (1982) and Conan the Destroyer (1984).
Red Sonja has been rated R for ‘Strong, Bloody Violence’, the best kind of violence, and will be released in cinemas on August 15th, then on digital platforms on August 29th.
