Out promoting Netflix limited series “All the Light We Cannot See,” filmmaker Shawn Levy spoke about his love of cinema in a new essay for Esquire where he reveals how a childhood experience with “Return of the Jedi” directly influenced the upcoming third “Deadpool” film.
Levy’s essay explores the state of moviegoing these days and how the “authentic, communal event” of a theatrical release is something he believes has a future.
He starts the essay talking about a memory of seeing the moment in “Return of the Jedi” when Luke is hiding from Vader in the Emperor’s room. Vader realises Luke has a sister, leading to a big operatic lightsaber battle under a platform initially and ending with Vader knocked down and Luke cutting off his hand.
Levy later in the piece reveals “Deadpool 3” will pay tribute to that scene, right down to the way it’s shot:
“For one key scene in the movie, I said to my stunt and action team, ‘Guys, this is the Jedi moment’. I pulled up that scene of Vader and Luke on my phone and restudied how it was photographed, how it was blocked, the framing, the tempo.
The keen Star Wars fan will see the shot in my Deadpool movie that was inspired by a moment that I saw in a theater decades ago. That’s a forever memory. And that’s a treasure.”
“Deadpool 3” was halted midway through production due to the ongoing actor’s strike and is expected to return to filming early next year assuming an agreement is reached prior to Thanksgiving.
