With his new post-apocalyptic film “Leave the World Behind” coming to Netflix on December 8th, “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail was on hand to attend the film’s AFI Fest premiere on Wednesday night.
The film, along with Peacock’s “The Resort” which he executive produced, marks one of the few projects Esmail has been linked to in recent years that is scoring a release. Numerous others have been in development but seem to have stalled.
In June his lavish television adaptation of Fritz Lang’s 1927 sci-fi classic “Metropolis,” which had been in development for years, was abruptly cancelled in the middle of pre-production in Melbourne, Australia due to the strikes and rising development costs.
In a red carpet interview with Deadline last night, Esmail was finally able to speak about the plug being pulled on that title saying:
“Obviously, it was heartbreaking, but during the strike, we all understood. And I got to work with a lot of talented people out in Australia, where we were mounting the production. It was a really good experience, and I don’t regret it for a second. As of right now, it’s officially over but it’s Hollywood, who knows?”
Esmail also says he is 100% sure he will team up again with Rami Malek on the right project, and offered an update on the long-gestating new take on “Battlestar Galactica”:
“Well, I can’t speak to the movie version, but for the TV series, we are working on it. And in fact, I just read a great outline and it’s in great shape. Because the strike is over now – at least the WGA strike is over – we’re back into developing it.”
“Leave the World Behind” stars Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke and Myha’la.
