Will Ferrell has explained his choice to revive Buddy the Elf character for an appearance at a hockey game between the Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers just before New Year’s.

The comedian went viral across social media for dressing in the outfit he wore in beloved holiday comedy “Elf” – albeit this time with a cigarette dangling from his mouth, a beer in hand and looking rather unshaven and a bit of a mess.

Appearing on Jason and Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast, Ferrell explained his decision to pull off the stunt, joking that Buddy got laid off from the North Pole. He says:

“That was just…I get these weird ideas every now and then. We’re season ticket holders for the L.A. Kings. We have seats right on the glass.

I told my wife, ‘Over the break, it would be funny if I just got a Buddy the Elf costume and didn’t shave for a week, and I’m just sitting there with a candy cigarette and I’m just gonna sit there for a period and see how people react.’

The reaction was insane!. Like, what is he doing? Is he promoting something? But occasionally I just like to do weird things like that just to stir it up.”

In fact, the moment made world news headlines as no-one could explain why Ferrell did the stunt. The original family-friendly film earned over $220 million at the worldwide box office and became a Christmas classic.

Ferrell has a new R-rated comedy, “You’re Cordially Invited,” hitting Amazon Prime on January 30th. Reese Witherspoon co-stars in that.
