Disney looked like it might have been digging itself out of a box office hole with Moana 2 over the last few weeks, only to find itself right back down there again with Mufasa: The Lion King. Their big budget sequel was kicked to the curb by Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 at the domestic box office this weekend.
The video game adaption has got good reviews and pulled in $62 million domestically as the box office prepares for the Christmas season. With no overseas opening until later this week, it can only climb higher.
Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King had a customarily huge Disney budget of $200 million, as cost control appears to be something that happens to other studios, and had a domestic start of only $35 million. For context, the Jon Favreau original grabbed $192 million in 2019. That is a disastrous franchise collapse.
Overseas it made $87.2 million, so it looks like foreign markets are all that can save it right now.
Moana 2 nabbed a further $13.1 million domestically and $32.8 million overseas.
A warning for gentlemen everywhere, Wicked is now starting to appear on PVOD services in time for Christmas, so you are not even safe from the threat in your own homes. That hasn’t slowed it down too much though, with another $13.5 million domestically and $13.2 million overseas taking it towards the $600 million mark globally. Its run at the box office is likely to end soon.
Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist is reviewing strong and had a limited opening of over a quarter of a million from just four screens.
