Last night some casting news dropped for Masters Of The Universe. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jared Leto has signed on to play Skeletor and face off against Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man to unlock the secrets of Castle Grayskull.
The Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films’ live-action adaption has also added Sam C. Wilson, Hafthor Bjornsson, and Kojo Attah to the cast. Wilson is to fill the role of Trap Jaw, Bjornsson will play Goat Man, and Attah is Tri-Klops. They join Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Skeletor’s second-in-command.
Camila Mendes is already locked as Teela, with Idris Elba as Man-at-Arms.
Plot details are still under wraps, but the script has passed through several development stages, and in one iteration involved He-Man becoming stranded on Earth, just like the 1987 infamous Cannon adaption.
Travis Knight will direct the film, and the release date is currently set as June 5, 2026. The latest version of the screenplay is from Chris Butler, with an initial draft by David Callaham and Aaron and Adam Nee. Escape Artists and Mattel Films produce.
Skeletor has a muddled and unclear history in the franchise. In the original minicomics, Skeletor was originally an inhabitant of another dimension until he was transported to Eternia during the “The Great Wars” when a hole opened in the dimensional wall, and he seeks to reopen the rift so that his race can invade and conquer Eternia.
When the Mattel toy line and Filmation animated series was created, his backstory was altered to include Hordak as his former master, and created Snake Mountain and other things now associated with the character.
In the 1987 live-action film, Skeletor is portrayed by Frank Langella. To prepare for the role, Langella asked his kids questions about Skeletor and watched the original series. Fans and critics highly regard his performance as being a high point in the film, and Langella has regarded Skeletor as one of his favorite roles.
