FX has cancelled The Old Man. The show was a critical darling, nominated for multiple awards. The first season scored 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and seemed set for a long run.
It told the story of Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges), a former CIA operative and Vietnam veteran, who 30 years ago was in Afghanistan. After killing an intruder who breaks into his home, Chase goes into hiding. He rents a room from Zoe McDonald, who becomes his forced partner while on the run.
FBI Assistant Director for Counterintelligence Harold Harper (John Lithgow) is called to apprehend Chase because of their complicated past during the Soviet-Afghan War. Working alongside Harper are his protégé, FBI agent Angela Adams, CIA officer Raymond Waters, and Julian Carson, a hit-man hired by Harper to kill Chase.
The show was renewed for a second season back in 2022 but in May 2023, it was reported that filming of the second season was to be suspended due to the Writers Guild of America strike. After two years off the air, when it finally returned the audience had moved on.
The second season sees Chase and former FBI assistant director Harold Harper (Lithgow) working together to rescue Chase’s daughter from a powerful Afghan tribal leader Faraz Hamzad (Navid Negahban) with links to both their pasts.
The second season saw a drop in numbers and lower critical scores.
The show was based on the 2017 novel The Old Man by Thomas Perry.
