Nearly a decade on and Zack Snyder’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” is still a divisive beast – a punching bag to some, a flawed but inspired work to others.
One thing that did get a lot of hate in that film was Jesse Eisenberg’s take on Lex Luthor – offering a long-haired, twitchy, awkward and verbose tech millionaire take on the character that didn’t sit well with the fandom.
Eisenberg has spoken in the past about the role and how he and writer Chris Terrio really did a lot of work on the character for the film, even though Eisenberg admits he wasn’t much of a comic book guy.
In a new interview with Dax Shepard on Armchair Expert (via Dexerto) whilst promoting his new directorial effort “A Real Pain,” Eisenberg revealed that the film had a negative impact on his career:
“I was in this ‘Batman’ movie and the ‘Batman’ movie was so poorly received, and I was so poorly received. I’ve never said this before, and it’s kind of embarrassing to admit, but I genuinely think it actually hurt my career in a real way, because I was poorly received in something so public.
I’ve been in poorly received things that just don’t see the light of day, and for the most part, no one knows, but this was so public, and I don’t read notices or reviews or movie press or anything, so I was unaware of how poorly it was received.
In the industry, if you’re in a huge, huge movie and not seen as good, the people who are choosing who to put next in their movie are just not gonna like you. You’re just associated with something… I loved my role, and I loved the movie, doing it and everything, so I feel like [I have] just myself to blame… so it did feel like I had to climb out again.”
The comments come as tomorrow morning we’ll see Nicholas Hoult debut in the Lex Luthor role in James Gunn’s new “Superman” movie which could bring up comparisons again. Meanwhile Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain,” in which he co-stars with Kieran Culkin,” is tipped to be an awards contender.
