Sony is closing out its Spider-Man spin-off films with less a whimper and more a thundering crash.
The studio’s R-rated comic book movie “Kraven the Hunter” pulled in $4.7 million on Friday, a number that includes $2.2 million in previews. Estimates now have it opening in third place with $10-12 million.
That makes it one of the worst openings ever for a film based on a Marvel comic book character, you’d have to go back to 2005’s “Elektra” with $12.4 million (not adjusted for inflation) to hit those levels again.
Reviewers are ravaging the film, and audiences have slapped it with a woeful ‘C’ CinemaScore – the worst for a Sony-Marvel film to date (“Madame Web” was C+). With a $110 million budget, it’s going to have to hold onto hope that international markets will be kinder – those numbers aren’t in yet.
It wasn’t the only new dud though. Warners’ animated film “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” looks to debut in fifth or sixth place at around $5 million.
The movie earned mixed reviews and a B CinemaScore. As it cost a little above $30 million to produce it will do little damage, but with the film having already had a disastrous offshore start it’ll be a surprise if it makes its budget back at the box-office.
“Moana 2” and “Wicked” continue to dominate with the films to pull in $26.6 million and $22.3 million for the three-day respectively – bringing their domestic totals to around $350 million each (“Wicked” a little above, “Moana 2” a little below).
“Gladiator II” will come in fourth with $7.8 million and “Red One” fifth with $5 million. The re-release of Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” continues to do strong business with $3.15 million from just 321 screens – pushing the re-release’s haul up to $11.6 million.
