After “Barbie” splashed pink all over the world to the tune of $1.4 billion at the box-office last year, talk of a sequel was inevitable.
However those involved, namely director Greta Gerwig and her partner and co-writer Noah Baumbach, have always suggested that it wasn’t likely anytime soon. They indicated in interviews that they would only do it if they could find a story to support the film that was as strong or stronger than the first.
Gerwig said earlier this year while accepting an honor: “What do I really care about? What’s the story underneath this story. If I find the undertow, then we get it. If I don’t find an undertow, there’s no more.”
Now, THR reports that Gerwig and Baumbach have come up with that idea and have already brought it to Warner Bros. Pictures who are no doubt jumping at the chance to get to work on it.
The project is said to be in “early stages,” but finding the story has opened the door for early deal talks. However both the studio and Gerwig and Baumbach’s rep have flat out denied this report, calling it “inaccurate” and having “no legitimacy”.
Should a deal be done though, the focus would be on getting out a script and lining up schedules. Baumbach is currently in post-production on a coming-of-age Netflix film while Gerwig is in pre-production on her “Chronicles of Narnia” adaptation which is aiming to shoot in July.
