Following the poster and a cryptic teaser over the weekend, Sony Pictures has now released the first trailer for Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later” – a long awaited follow-up to his iconic 2002 horror feature “28 Days Later” and its sequel “28 Weeks Later”.

It has been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected.

One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway.

When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.

Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell and Erin Kellyman co-star in the film which was made on a budget of $75 million and was reportedly shot with an iPhone 15 by Boyle’s usual cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle.

Filmmaker Alex Garland has returned to write the script for not just this but two further films in a planned trilogy. The second film, directed by Nia DaCosta, has already been shot and will likely arrive in 2026.

“28 Years Later” opens in cinemas in June next year.
