MachineGames is set to unveil “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” on PC and Xbox on December 9th, but already the game has gone online for premium edition buyers of the game and the response is rapturous so far.

With 53 reviews counted, the title has racked up an 87/100 on Metacritic which precisely matches the score of MachineGames’ previous best effort to date – 2017’s “Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus”.

Compared to this year’s games, it’s on par with “Persona 3 Reload” and just ahead of the”Silent Hill 2″ remake and “Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown” which both nabbed an 86.

Compared to other titles in the same genre, it sits well behind 92-96 of the “Uncharted” sequels but is on par with the first “Uncharted” (88) and both the 2013 “Tomb Raider” reboot (86) and its sequel “Rise of the Tomb Raider” (88).

There are no negative reviews, only a few mixed ones with the only real complaints being about its underwhelming AI and some clunky management menus. Praise is high especially for the storytelling, performances, tone and puzzles.

Should the title sell well, its success may lead to more according to Lucasfilm Games vice president and general manager Douglas Reilly. He tells Variety that more Indy stories in the interactive medium are quite possible:

“Right now, we’re focused on getting this one to the public and getting to the DLC and making this as successful as we can. I think we’re always looking for great stories. And the good news is, there’s a lot of space in between the films where we could tell more and more Indiana Jones stories that I think would be super interesting.”

The game, set between the events of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “The Last Crusade,” marks the first Indiana Jones game title to release for consoles since a 2009 LEGO title.

“Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” arrives on Xbox and PC on Monday and will hit PlayStation 5 ealry next year.
