At last report back in March, producer Jerry Bruckheimer seemingly confirmed that the next “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie will serve as a full reboot of the franchise. Now that seems less clear.
Variety did a report today on Disney’s smash recent success with “Moana 2”. Part of that report goes into their live-action efforts and says Bruckheimer is moving forward with a new film, but he’s developing two versions of a script at the same time – one with Johnny Depp returning and one without.
The trade’s sources say the studio has not engaged with Depp as of yet and getting the actor and Disney to reconcile would be key to one of those scripts having even the possibility of moving forward.
Previously, “The Last of Us” and “Chernobyl” co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin revealed that he and regular ‘Pirates’ scribe Ted Elliot had begun developing a new ‘Pirates’ film, which they pitched to Disney, thinking it would never fly. Mazen said at the time: “[We] thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did.”
There has also long been talk of a potential Margot Robbie-led spin-off film which was first announced in 2020 with Christina Hodson (“Birds of Prey”) to pen the script. As far as Robbie was aware back in late 2022, the project had stalled.
The “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise has pulled in over $4.52 billion at the global box-office across its five films – though only the first remains critically acclaimed.
