At last report back in February, a follow-up to 1997 comedy “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” appeared to be picking up steam.
Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow starred in the David Mirkin-directed film about two women who try and impress their former classmates by making up fake careers – namely that they invented Post-its.
In February, Sorvino confirmed that the film’s screenwriter and “Emily in Paris” executive producer Robin Schiff was returning to write the sequel while herself and Kurdrow were “wrapping up our deals” with the studio.
Now, in a new interview with People, Sorvino confirms a deal has been done with a director, and both she and Kudrow are on board as executive producers for a sequel. She adds:
“[Schiff] has written multiple drafts of an amazing funny script, which checks all the boxes for all the fans. Almost every single character from the original that was important is coming back….This is all pending, them making deals, them saying yes, but they’re all in there.”
Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, Julia Campbell, Vincent Ventresca, Elaine Hendrix, Justin Theroux and Camryn Manheim also starred in the original.
Sorvino adds that the sequel could begin shooting as early as the “second quarter of next year”. The adds the caution: “But, it’s not officially greenlit, so I can’t say that it’s officially greenlit” but it is “so close to being greenlit”.
