The debate about cinemagoing audience conduct and whether people should be singing during screenings of “Wicked” continued today as one of the film’s stars weighed in.

Cynthia Erivo, who plays leading lady Elphaba in the film, was asked about it during an interview at Thursday’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade broadcast on NBC according to Variety.

Co-host Hoda Kotb questioned it was OK to sing along in the theater since so many fans were doing it, to which Erivo responded: “Good. I’m OK with it. We spent this long singing it ourselves – it’s time for everyone else to join in. It’s wonderful.”

The comments follow from ones made by Dwayne Johnson earlier this week at the “Moana 2” premiere, encouraging fans to sing along at a musical in cinemas – be it his film or Erivo’s. He said: “Sing! You’ve paid your hard-earned money for a ticket, and you’ve gone into a musical, and you’re into it. Sing.”

Audience members singing at “Wicked” has sparked online discussion as ticket buyers only care to hear the professionals in the film belt out tracks, and special interactive singalong screenings for the film have been organised for Christmas Day for those itching to do so.

AMC Theatres has been airing a ‘Wicked’ preshow spot that includes a ‘no singing’ rule, reminding moviegoers to not disrupt the experience for those around them as they enjoy the show.

The film has also drawn headlines for illegal filming of good portions of the movie by fans who are posting themselves watching the film online.
