Alan Tudyk has confirmed that he’s playing Clayface in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, starting with Max’s animated “Creature Commandos” TV series.

The “Resident Alien” and “Firefly” star already voices the famed shapeshifting Batman villain in Max’s “Harley Quinn” adult animated series, a series regular and in that version is a classically trained yet terrible actor who overdevelops his personas.

That show exists separate from the DCU, whereas “Creature Commandos” is very much a part of the DCU. In ‘Commandos’, this Clayface sounds like more of an unstable mercenary type.

Speaking with Rotten Tomatoes while promoting the show with his fellow cast members, Tudyk says:

“Harley Quinn… is very comedic, it’s straight up comedy whereas this one is a drama that has that is funny that has humorous elements within it but it is action and it’s drama and passion.

I play Clayface in Harley Quinn and he sounds [puts on Clayface voice] ‘like this and he’s an idiot and he’s always like what’s my motivation here, Daddy didn’t love me’ yeah it’s that.

Then in in this, Clayface is a killer he’s…. we have a huge fight and he’s a homicidal maniac. So it’s the same character. That’s really cool about DC, I get to play the actual same character two completely different ways and I like them both.

It’s really nice that James let me play Clayface [in Creature Commandos], I was so happy I didn’t even have to ask. I was going to ask when I saw it in there and he let me know that I got to do it.”

Indira Varma, Frank Grillo, Viola Davis, David Harbour, Steve Agee, Maria Bakalova, Anya Chalotra, Zoë Chao and Sean Gunn co-star in the series which focuses on a black ops team of monsters assembled by Amanda Waller.

“Creature Commandos” is set to debut on Max on December 5th with a double episode. The seven-episode run continues through January 9th.
