For many years there have been calls for a killer hippo film, movies have rarely portrayed hippos and the few that do generally limit them to small sequences (eg. “Congo”). Now, it may finally be happening.

A survival thriller titled “Hungry” is being launched at the American Film Market this week by Signature Entertainment and filmmaker James Nunn (“One Shot,” “Tower Block,” “Shark Bait”).

The film centers on a group of holidaymakers that must fight for their lives against a rampaging hippo on the loose after becoming lost in the Louisiana swamplands.

Hippos are considered one of the most dangerous animals on the planet. Highly aggressive and territorial, the creatures kill around 500 people every year – multiple times more than lions.

Award-winning MUFX designer Dan Martin (“Possessor,” “The Banshees of Inisherin”) and VFX company Magic Dust VFX (“One Piece,” “True Detective: Night Country”) have both boarded the project, no further details on other crew are available.

Principal photography has begun in Malta, with Nunn directing from his own screenplay. Ben Jacques produces.
