No one thought a musical of Back to the Future would be a hit, but it was. It’s been in the West End of London and on Broadway, and it’s been rather popular.
Robert Zemeckis, the original director of the BttF trilogy, has always said he would never want to do a fourth movie, and we all love him for that. He has been pleased with the success of the Back to the Future Musical though.
Zemeckis has said he would like to have seen it on the big screen, but Universal have said no. He recently said in an interview:
“I would like to do the Back to the Future, the musical. Just like [Mel] Brooks did The Producers. I would love to do that. I think that would be great… I floated that out to the folks at Universal. They don’t get it. So, nothing I can do.”
I’ll bet they would jump at the chance of a fourth movie though. If the musical is making money, you’d think they would do it. It’s had a run of nearly 500 shows, in Manchester, London and Broadway, and turned over nearly $80 million.
There was new, original music by original composer, Alan Silvestri and it won two Tony Awards. Lyrics for the songs were by Glen Ballard, with help from Alanis Morissette. Original producer, Bob Gale, even had a hand in writing it.
I’m trying to think of musical remakes that work; Little Shop of Horrors, The Phantom of the Opera, Aladdin, that’s about it though, right?
