It’s official. In the wake of the global box-office record performance and Oscar-winning success of “Godzilla Minus One” last year, Toho has given the green light to a new film in the franchise.
Takashi Yamazaki, the writer, director and VFX supervisor of “Godzilla Minus One” will return to direct the new film. No further details were announced.
The announcement is timed with this weekend’s North American wide re-release of “Godzilla Minus One” in order to celebrate Godzilla Day on November 3rd – the day the original “Godzilla” film debuted in Japan in 1954.
Last year’s “Godzilla Minus One” grossed $115 million worldwide with $56.4 million of that coming from the U.S. – making it the third-highest-grossing foreign-language film in U.S. box office history.
When the film’s ultra-lean $15 million budget is taken into account, the achievement is even more impressive. The film scored the Best Visual Effects Oscar, the first “Godzilla” title to be nominated for an Oscar.
