Uma Thurman, Anthony Hopkins and Phoebe Dynevor (“Younger”) are set to lead “The Housekeeper,” the new film from “Iris” and “Notes on a Scandal” director Richard Eyre.
The project is based on novelist Rose Tremain’s short story and upcoming novel which itself is a meta-sounding romantic fictionalisation of the events that inspired Daphne du Maurier’s iconic 1938 gothic novel “Rebecca”.
“Rebecca” spawned Alfred Hitchcock’s famous Oscar Best Picture-winning 1940 film adaptation and more recently a not well-received 2020 Netflix film from Ben Wheatley.
In this incarnation Thurman plays Danni, a housekeeper at a historic Cornwall estate called Manderville Hall owned by Lord DeWithers (Hopkins). Danni soon finds herself in a forbidden love affair with the young and beautiful novelist Daphne Du Maurier (Dynevor).
Eyre says in a statement:
“Rose Tremain’s story grapples with love, fear, fiction, desire, ambition, death, and legacy – perhaps epic, whilst providing us with the delicacy of most complex, nuanced characters and unexpected shifts in audience sympathy. The cast and I hold in our palm a story as rich and turbulent as the landscape that it inhabits, with Manderville Hall holding secrets and emotional intrigue within its historic walls.”
Production is expected to begin shortly as the film is aiming to be released to audiences at the end of 2025.
