Long-running production company Alcon Entertainment, who helped produce “Blade Runner 2049” at Warner Bros. Pictures, is suing Tesla over use of unlicensed promotional materials made by feeding an A.I. image generator photos from the film.
Alcon filed the lawsuit on Monday in California federal court, accusing Elon Musk and Tesla of misappropriating the film’s brand to promote the Tesla robotaxi at a showcase recently.
Alcon says it doesn’t want their film to be affiliated with Musk due to his extreme views. The filing comes as Alcon has the upcoming spin-off TV series “Blade Runner 2099” in the works.
The complaint states: “Any prudent brand considering any Tesla partnership has to take Musk’s massively amplified, highly politicized, capricious and arbitrary behavior, which sometimes veers into hate speech, into account. Alcon did not want BR2049 to be affiliated with Musk.”
The complaint includes claims for copyright infringement and false endorsement, naming Warner Bros. Discovery for allegedly facilitating the partnership. Alcon reportedly indicates it wasn’t informed about the brand deal between Tesla and Warners until the day of the unveiling.
Alcon seeks unspecified damages and a court order barring Tesla from further distributing the disputed promotional materials.
