James Gunn has offered a first look at Krypto the Superdog from his upcoming “Superman” film opening in U.S. cinemas in July.
The posting includes original comic artwork, a shot of Gunn with his adopted dog Ozu who helped inspired the charactr, and then motion art involving Corenswet’s Superman with the film’s version of the pooch.
Created by in 1955, Krypto is Kryptonian dog and possesses similar powers to the Man of Steel – but with the temperament of a dog. In the posting, Gunn explains how Ozu influenced the Krypto seen in the new Superman film:
“Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop.
It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life. What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog month. Btw, Ozu today, is, fairly often, a very good boy.”
“Superman” stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, Neva Howell as Martha Kent, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho among others.
“Superman” will be released in cinemas on July 11th 2025.
