By Out promoting her acclaimed work in “The Outrun” and an upcoming role in “Blitz,” Irish actress Saoirse Ronan revealed she could’ve starred opposite Scarlett Johansson in Marvel Studios’ “Black Widow”.
Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz asked Ronan if she had been offered the role of Yelena Belova, a role that ultimately went to “Little Women” co-star Florence Pugh.
Ronan played coy, saying: “How did you hear about that?”. The host followed up asking Ronan if she had anything “against the Marvel stuff”. She says she has no interest in joining that world, but loves the films.
She also hinted at one franchise she would like to join – James Bond:
“I can’t see myself doing Marvel. I don’t… No, I would prefer to do Bond. There’s nothing wrong with [Marvel] and I think they’re brilliant films. I want to do more big movies. I’m at the point where I’ve done… I love making independent film, I really do, but to know – especially in this landscape that we’re in, in film right now – to know that a film is going to be seen is such a luxury.”
She adds she also wants to be in big studio pictures, saying: “I wanna do that! Of course I want to do that stuff. I like big shows and I want to be in a musical and I want to do all that.”
In a separate interview with Jimmy Kimmel Live, she says one role that she did lose out on that has haunted her was for one of the biggest franchises of all time:
“There’s things that you’ll pass on and then they come out, and you think, ‘Oh God, that was a misstep on my part,’ but I think the one that stayed with me over the years – I didn’t say no to it, I just didn’t get the part. I lost, again. It’s a running theme for me.
I had gone up for Luna Lovegood in ‘Harry Potter’ years ago, because it was like the Irish character, so they got everyone Irish in – like half of Ireland to come and audition – and I knew I wasn’t going to get it because I was too young, but I got to read out a scene that was gonna be in ‘Harry Potter’ and it was the coolest thing ever.”
Though she missed out on that role, the same year that film opened, she appeared in “Atonement,” and the 12-year-old actress landed herself a best supporting actress Oscar nomination – not a bad consolation prize.
