Having directed the two “Joker” films, writer-director Todd Phillips confirms that he’s ‘done’ with further DC Comics adaptations.
Phillips’ first “Joker” made over $1 billion and won Joaquin Phoenix the Best Actor Oscar, the film proving a true sensation at the time. The sequel arrives in cinemas today amid a wave of hype, but also a quickly spiralling public sentiment.
Speaking with THR, Phillips indicated he wasn’t interested in doing a third “Joker”. He was then asked if he would ever want to do a standalone film for Lady Gaga’s character to which he responded:
“It’s not really where this movie is headed for me. I feel like my time in the DC Universe was these two films.”
The quote comes as the film, which was riding high before its premiere at Venice, has subsequently seen its review scores and box-office projections tank.
What was at one time a 61% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes has today fallen to 39% (5.2/10) as more reviews have come in from regular non-festival critics.
Domestic box-office projections are down to around $50 million – or half of what they were just over a month ago – putting its opening in the range of “The Flash” and “The Marvels”.
