Sony Interactive Entertainment has blamed a ‘tech error’ for the appearance of obtrusive full-screen adverts on the PlayStation 5 dashboard.
In recent weeks, Sony released an update for PS5 that added the “Welcome Hub” to the console’s dashboard – allowing users to fine-tune their experience.
In the wake of the overhaul though, users reported that when they hovered over a video game icon on the homepage, they were seeing adverts and news feed items replacing the individual game artwork as the background.
Users quickly figured that if this was a new feature, it was working incorrectly as outdated and irrelevant ads were being shown.
In a message posted on Ask PlayStation, the company’s official North American X support account, they say: “A tech error with the Official News feature on the PS5 console has since been resolved. There have been no changes to the way game news is displayed on PS5.”
Following that post, testing by outlets show news feed items are no longer being forced upon PS5 users when selecting their games. Original game art is now showing in the homescreen background as before.
