By Big Talk Studios (“The Outlaws”) is reportedly in the early stages of pitching a UK version of NBC’s iconic comedy “Cheers”.
British writer Simon Nye (“Men Behaving Badly,” “The Durrells in Corfu”) has been hired to adapt the series for a UK audience and will serve as showrunner if it proceeds.
The production company reportedly received permission to develop an adaptation by distributor CBS Studios.
The original series ran for 11 seasons and 275 episodes on NBC. It followed a group of regulars in a Boston bar run by Sam Malone (Ted Danson). Kelsey Grammer, Kirstie Alley, Shelley Long and more co-starred in the now legendary series.
This marks a rare reverse of a British scripted series adopting an American format, especially with comedies as it’s usually the Brits exporting their comedies like “The Office” and “Ghosts” for remakes overseas.
Indeed, Big Talk Studios is currently working with HBO on a U.S. version of UK Channel 4 show “Back” created by writer Simon Blackwell.
Big Talk Studios is also working with “Ghosts” duo Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond on a “Family Guy”-inspired animated series titled “Case of Emergency” set in a British hospital.
