By Activision CCO Josh Taub says the game publisher has heard the calls for a new “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater” title – and the outlook for those fans is good.
The first game, launched on this day in 1999 by Neversoft for the PlayStation, was followed by annual sequels until 2007’s “Proving Ground”. The first few of these skateboard games were highly acclaimed.
Attempts to revive the franchise in the 2010s with titles from developer Robomodo like “Ride,” “Shred,” and “Pro Skater 5” failed. It jumped back into the zeitgeist with 2020’s “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2” remake which scored rave reviews and became the fastest-selling game in the franchise.
Speaking with Digital Trends, Taub says the company considers the title still a big one for the company:
“The Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater franchise is celebrating 25 years this month, and it remains an important core franchise for Activision today. The success of the franchise is a testament to its legacy and the community of players.”
Developer Vicarious Visions was reportedly working on a “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4” title until they were merged with Blizzard Entertainment. Hawk himself revealed a while back they were “trying to find someone to do 3 + 4” but “didn’t like anything they heard and then that was it”.
Something may have changed though. Hawk previously teased he’s talking to Activision again and is working on ‘something’. Today, taking to Instagram to celebrate the franchise, he added: “I’m not supposed to tease anything else about the future of the series; but there will be a future”.
