In the wake of the premiere of “The Batman” spin-off series “The Penguin” last night, executive producer Matt Reeves has confirmed that the script for the upcoming “The Batman Part II” film has been finalised.
“The Penguin” series creator Lauren LeFranc, star Colin Farrell, and Reeves have been doing press the past few days for the show which will act as a bridge between the two “Batman” films.
The second film will arrive in October 2026 with filming slated to begin early next year. Speaking with EW, Reeves confirms its going smoothly with the script now done.
He says that there’s “a period of time” from which ‘Part II; will jump to after the first film and TV series. He adds that The Penguin character will help people catch up in the film:
“Oz does become one of the entry points into the movie. I can’t tell you where it goes from there except to say that we’re super excited about it.”
Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne/Batman isn’t in “The Penguin,” but Reeves says he’s not opposed to that possibility in other series:
“That’s not to say that there would never be an appearance by Batman or Bruce or something like that [on a future series]. Lauren and I did speak: Do we want to find a way to get Rob to somehow be in this show? But that was an afterthought.”
The big question about the second film though is who will lens it. The visuals of the first film were handled by Oscar-winning Australian cinematographer Greig Fraser whose work on the likes of “Rogue One,” both “Dune” films and “The Creator” have some pegging him as ‘the next Roger Deakins’.
Fraser’s work was critical to the first film, but Reeves tells Collider he’s unsure if Fraser will be available:
“I don’t know yet. I certainly hope that the timing will work out for that, but I actually don’t know. We’re not to the place where we know that yet. I hope that’s the case because I just love working with him. I think he’s the best. Actually, he was a little bit involved in the series, too, because I said I wanted to make sure the DNA was the same as we went off and found our own visual voice.”
Finally, in terms of other series, Reeves says HBO wants ‘marquee characters’ like The Penguin so any other “The Batman” spin-off shows will likely have to revolve around well-known members Batman’s Rogue’s Gallery.
