By “Spider-Man” star Tom Holland and Oscar nominee Austin Butler are attached to play drug-smuggling brothers for the new drama “American Speed”.
The Insneider broke the news, adding that Oscar-winning veteran producer Charles Roven is producing the project.
However the project appears to be just a package with the two stars at the moment – no director or writer mentioned, nor any studio attached at this point.
The lack of a director mention is strange, but the report indicates Amazon made an offer and both Warner Bros. and Paramount have already passed.
The film will be based on the true story of Texan brothers Don, Dale and Bill Whittington who were race car drivers. Don and Bill competed in both Le Mans and multiple times in the Indy 500.
They were also part of the International Motor Sports Association scandal of the 1980s in which drivers financed their racing activities with the proceeds from drug smuggling. In this case, it was marijuana from Colombia. Two of the brothers were arrested.
Butler is currently filming Darren Aronofsky’s “Caught Stealing,” Holland is coming off a stage turn in “Romeo and Juliet” with “Spider-Man 4” and “Uncharted 2” expected sometime in the future.
