By Recent rumblings about a potential sequel to 1985 family film classic “The Goonies” has been shot down by two of the original film’s stars.
Actors Corey Feldman and Martha Plimpton both recently responded to a report, which seem to have originated from a British tabloid, claiming a sequel is in the works with the original cast expected to return and filming to take place next year.
Feldman said on X: “I CAN OFFICIALLY TELL U 100% NO! I HAV NO INFO THAT A SEQUEL IS IN THE WORX”.
Plimpton also shot down the news, saying on her Instagram account: “People, there is no Goonies 2 script, there is no one ‘attached’. Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real.”
Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Ke Huy Quan, Kerri Green, Jeff Cohen, Mary Ellen Trainor, Anne Ramsey, Robert Davi and Joe Pantoliano co-starred in the original about a group of kids who follow an old pirate map they find in their attic in hopes of finding hidden treasure.
The cast reunited for a virtual COVID-19 fundraiser in 2020, but otherwise, sequel talk has floated around for many years and never eventuated into anything.
Those involved with the franchise’s making – like producers Spielberg and Lauren Shuler Donner, co-writer Chris Columbus, and the late director Richard Donner – have previously indicated they’ve yet to find a story good enough to justify it.
