By Sam Raimi’s “Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness” opted to take an unexpected route with Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch.
The character, coming off the events of “WandaVision,” inexplicably turns into a full-on villain between the end of that series and the start of the film, the reasoning being put down to corruption by the Darkhold book.
But that wasn’t the original plan. Earlier this week scooper MyTimeToShineH shared a breakdown of an early version of the film which follows a more logical and sympathetic story for Wanda.
Since then, former “X-Men ’97” showrunner Beau DeMayo has confirmed on X that was correct and goes into detail about what would’ve happened:
“OG drafts did her justice. Wanda was with Strange recovering after Westview, feeling bad about what she did. She helps him, Wong and Chavez (who she tutors) beat Nightmare across Multiverse, where she also sees her variants happy with her kids.
Still, Wanda resists and she — not Chavez — helps Strange save the day against Nightmare, who turns out to be a Darkhold-corrupted Strange variant. Also, she used her experiences in WandaVision to warn Chavez about abusing her power.
Only after saving the day, unable to resist finding a multiverse where she can be with her kids, does Wanda — sobbing — break from Strange and accidentally beheads Wong, who tries to stop her from fleeing into the multiverse. That was film’s cliffhanger.
Made far more sense, and even when she flees, Wanda is torn up by guilt in classic comic book fashion and keeps apologizing to Strange as she vanishes and leaves him with his dead friend’s body.”
Reviews for Raimi’s film were softly positive and it did end up being a hit, grossing $955.8 million worldwide. However it came at a cost – being one of the most expensive films ever made with a net budget of $351 million.
