Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has revealed that writer Akiva Goldsman has put the finishing touches on the script for the sequel to 2005’s “Hellblazer” comic-to-film adaptation “Constantine”.
Talk of the sequel has swirled around for many years but picked up steam almost two years ago exactly when it was announced actor Keanu Reeves and director Francis Lawrence would return.
Goldsman at the time was attached to write the script and it looks like he has finally done it. J.J. Abrams is also producing the film.
di Bonaventura tells ComicBook.com that he’s recently received the script and is approaching the reading of it with trepidation:
“You know it’s in my inbox right now. Funny enough, I’m too scared to read it, though. I want it to be good so bad. I probably read it in the next few days. When I get on an airplane.”
In the original film, chain-smoking supernatural exorcist and demonologist John Constantine attempts to help a woman (Rachel Weisz) sees him get caught up in the battle between heaven and hell.
The archangel Gabriel (Tilda Swinton), and even Lucifer (Peter Stormare) all get involved. Shia LaBeouf, Djimon Hounsou and Gavin Rossdale also starred in the film which grossed $280 million.
