Nearly twenty years after it premiered, FOX’s late 2000s drama/thriller series “Prison Break” has topped Nielsen’s streaming rankings.
The full series was added to Netflix on July 29th and debuted on the chart that week. Now, for the week of August 5th-11th which has just been made available by Nielsen, it jumped to 1.6 billion minutes viewed for the week.
That easily topped the chart, even beating the first half-week of the fourth and final season of “The Umbrella Academy” which debuted August 8th and came in second with 1.46 billion minutes of viewing.
“Bluey” was third with 1.03 billion, followed by “Grey’s Anatomy” (940m) and “House of the Dragon” (935m) rounding out the top five. “NCIS” fell out of the top 10 for the first time since December 2020 following a continuous 188 weeks on the chart.
The huge bump for “Prison Break” has been put entirely down to the show’s addition to Netflix. The series has been available on Hulu for years but has never seen this kind of success on streaming charts until now.
The show’s jump to the top charts has led to questions of whether the show can sustain its momentum and led to a “Suits”-style streak as seen during Summer last year on Netflix.
The original show starred Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell as brothers. When one is framed and sent to prison, the other gets convicted and sent to the same prison where he has a plan to escape.
The series was a massive hit in its first season, drawing both very good reviews and major numbers, but the series lost some steam in its second season. The series ran for four seasons through to 2009 along with a telemovie.
It was revived for a nine-episode single season in 2017, and there is talk that Hulu has another revival currently in the works.
