Two weeks after it was pulled over the inclusion of AI-generated false quotes from film critics, Lionsgate has now released a revised version of the second trailer for filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola’s epic “Megalopolis”.
The film is a Roman Epic set in an imagined Modern America. The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare.
Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), the mayor’s daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties, forcing her to discover what she truly believes humanity deserves.
Coppola has credited the H.G. Wells-penned 1936 film “Things to Come” as his first inspiration for this $120 million-budgeted drama.
The supporting cast includes Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Kathryn Hunter, Dustin Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Chloe Fineman and James Remar.
Coppola wrote the script and is himself financing the long-gestating project which launched at the Cannes Film Festival to mixed reviews but plenty of discussion.
Trouble is, the discussion doesn’t appear to be translating to interest as early tracking has the film likely to open at just $4-8 million domestically according to Box-Office Pro.
“Megalopolis” will release in U.S. cinemas on September 27th.
