Last week, author George R.R. Martin teased that he was going to be doing a ‘tell-all’ post about HBO’s spin-off series “House of the Dragon,” discussing “everything that’s gone wrong” with the series.
Martin co-created the hit series and has been quite public in his support of it, even when they made creative choices he wasn’t thrilled about, so the comment came as a surprise. That said, the show’s second season has come under criticism from fans.
Earlier today, Martin then delivered a post addressing some of the complaints he had with the show’s second season which seem to be mostly issued with creative elements like the omission of Helaena’s youngest son Maelor Targaryen from the Blood & Cheese storyline.
It would’ve been a one-scene cameo, but as Martin explains Maelor’s inclusion is vital in terms of character motivations – especially Helaena’s – later on. He says not include Maelor “may make sense in terms of budgets and shooting schedules, but simpler is not better”.
That post was subsequently deleted, but HBO has already responded to Martin’s complaints. In a statement, they tell TV Line:
“Commonly, when adapting a book for the screen, with its own format and limitations, the showrunner is ultimately required to make difficult choices about the characters and stories the audience will follow.
We believe that Ryan Condal and his team have done an extraordinary job and the millions of fans the series has amassed over the first two seasons will continue to enjoy it.”
Martin’s original post also warned that “there are larger and more toxic butterflies to come” if series goes ahead with some of the changes being contemplated for its next few seasons. Will he still go through with discussing them? We’ll see.
