Australian director Justin Kurzel’s new crime thriller “The Order” had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival this evening where the film received a 9.4 minute standing ovation.
The film’s cast, such as Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan and Jurnee Smollett, were all on hand for the premiere of the film, which has been one of several warmly received works at the fest.
Based on the 1989 non-fiction book “The Silent Brotherhood” by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt, the story is set in the Pacific Northwest during the 1980s.
Law plays an FBI agent who believes a series of bank robberies and car heists were the work of a group of domestic terrorists and white supremacists. Hoult plays the leader of the group.
The film deals with the ensuing battle between law enforcement and the far-right group. Speaking at the premiere, Kurzel says:
“I think we live at a time now that was reflected in the film, where there is division, and there’s a lot of conversation about the future and about ideologies. The film was about an ideology that’s incredibly dangerous and how it can quickly take seed… I think that’s a timeless thing, not only in America, but in Australia too.”
Vertical is set to release “The Order” in the U.S. in December, with Amazon Prime Video handling much of the worldwide distribution.
