By Russell T. Davies, the showrunner who helped revive “Doctor Who” in 2005, left and then returned for this year’s Disney+ era of the program, says the future of the series will remain unclear for nearly another year.
The Ncuti Gatwa-led version of the series kicked off its first full season on May 11th and wrapped its run on June 22nd. The show has already shot its second season, which wrapped filming about the same time the first season went to air.
That second season isn’t expected to air until around a similar time next year, but it’s likely a third season, if it gets the green light, won’t be making the same window in 2026.
Speaking with SFX magazine, Davies says he doesn’t expect there to be news on a third season renewal until the second one has aired:
“It’s an industry decision, it’s like any business – these things take time. I think the decision will come after the transmission of season two. That’s what we’re expecting, that’s what we’ve always been heading towards.”
Gatwa’s second season sees Varada Sethu portraying Belinda Chandra while Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday will appear for at least a few episodes in the second season. Before that comes a Christmas special which will star Nicola Coughlan (“Bridgerton”).
