Though the critics quite liked it, Netflix has canceled its DC Comics adaptation “Dead Boy Detectives” after just one season. The eight-episode series premiered on the service on April 25th.
The characters, created by Neil Gaiman, and the action are set in “The Sandman” universe. Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri) are ‘the brains’ and ‘the brawn’ behind the Dead Boy Detectives agency.
Teenagers born decades apart who find each other only in death, Edwin and Charles are best friends and ghosts… who solve mysteries.
With the help of their very alive clairvoyant friend Crystal Palace (Kassius Nelson) and her friend Niko (Yuyu Kitamura), they are able to crack some of the mortal realm’s most mystifying paranormal cases.
Jenn Lyon, Briana Cuoco, Ruth Connell, Lukas Gage and David Iacono co-starred while Steve Yockey and Beth Schwartz were the showrunners.
The series had a confusing path to the screen. Yockey wrote a “Doom Patrol” third season episode that introduced the characters on screen, though they were separate incarnation from this played by different actors.
This version got a series order at Max in 2022 before it was sold to Netflix last year because the show didn’t fit with Gunn & Safran’s new DC Universe initiative.
The series was in the Netflix Top 10 English TV charts for three weeks after its release, peaking at #2, but still only managed just 3.1 million views in its first three days of availability and 4.7 million in its first full week before quickly slipping away.
