Like it or not, you can’t escape critical aggregate service Rotten Tomatoes with its limited binary system – films are either fresh or rotten with nothing in between which is where most films often reside.
Now though, the site is adding a new metric to the way its scoring – but only in regards to its audience poll known as the Popcornmeter.
The site has announced ‘Verified Hot’, a new label that will be granted to films which have a 90% or better score from verified audience reviews.
This means that films that critics love and audiences don’t will be ‘Verified Fresh,’ films audiences love and critics don’t will be ‘Verified Hot’ and films they both love will get both labels.
The audience meter otherwise remains the same with a tipped over popcorn badge for anything under 60% of reviews being at least 3.5 stars, and a regular popcorn badge for between 60-90%.
The move is actually seen as a good one as it lends a certain credibility to user-submitted reviews – though doesn’t cut down on other issues with said polls (i.e. review bombing).
