“Jurassic World,” “Kong: Skull Island” and “Detective Pikachu” screenwriter Derek Connolly has closed a deal to adapt the SEGA 1990s “Eternal Champions” video game series into a feature film for Skydance.
Launched in 1993, the fighting game was developed for the Sega Genesis and set on an Earth heading for a dire fate.
An all-powerful being gathers the souls of key humans from different eras in history, people destined for greatness but died before fulfilling their potential, and pits them against each other in a fighting tournament.
Those who lose remain in death, while the last survivor gets to regain their life in hopes of bringing balance back to the universe and potentially save the planet.
The result saw characters including a future Syrian bounty hunter, to a 1920s cat burglar, a Russian aristocrat/acrobat, and a prehistoric hunter among others.
Toru Nakahara, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger will produce. Connolly has both a “Transformers/GI Joe” crossover film and a “The Legend of Zelda” game-to-film adaptation in the works.
