Filmmaker James Gunn’s “Superman” wrapped filming back at the end of July, a full year out from the film’s release in cinemas next July.
With plenty of time before the film’s release, one question that can be fairly asked is when and how much additional photography will be required.
Answering that very question on Threads this weekend, Gunn says he doesn’t expect any reshoots to take place, and his track record speaks to that as his last two films only saw a single day of additional photography done across the two.
Gunn explains why it’s not necessary and the basic answer? Proper preparation:
“Over-prepare. Don’t start shooting until I have a finished script my whole team is happy with.
Hire actors and department heads I know can do their jobs. Surround myself with people who will challenge me and not just yes-sir everything.
Ask myself daily – are there any small imperfections in the script or what we’re shooting that might end up feeling like huge imperfections when we cut the film together.”
That marks a stark contrast to Marvel Studios where not only are reshoots the norm, but studio chief Kevin Feige says additional photography is key to the success of their films – even as that approach has come under criticism, especially from VFX artists.
The film tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and a better tomorrow, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.
The film’s cast includes David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and supporting roles from Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Sean Gunn, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Isabel Merced, María Gabriela de Faría and Nathan Fillion.
“Superman” opens in cinemas everywhere July 11th 2025.
