The first five episodes of the final season of Netflix’s “Cobra Kai” were released two weeks ago, and so far they’ve been viewed 24.3 million times worldwide according to the streamer.
The batch marks the first of three lots of episodes from the series with the next two coming in November and early 2025 respectively. But what comes after that?
We know Sony has a new “The Karate Kid” film on the way next year with Ralph Macchio involved, but what about the show’s creative team? Series creators Hayden Schlossberg, Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz recently spoke with THR and during the chat hinted at a potential Mr. Miyagi prequel.
Asked if there is any room for spinoffs after “Cobra Kai” closes, Schlossberg says “we think about spinoffs with Cobra Kai all the time” and the show itself is essentially a “spinoff of The Karate Kid” anyway. It’s then he goes on to tease something exciting:
“It is one of the reasons why we did the Miyagi box story this season. It opens up all these questions about Mr. Miyagi and what his life was like, and that’s been something we’ve been wanting to do for a while.
We’ve talked to Robert Mark Kamen, the writer of the original Karate Kid who based this whole movie off his sensei who studied Okinawan karate; we’ve been talking about all this Miyagi backstory with him, which helped us with season six stuff. Now that we’re done, we can actually start getting into this stuff.
When the interviewer then says it sounds like he’s talking about a Mr. Miyagi prequel series, Schlossberg continues:
“I would say that we definitely want to do that and have been talking about that… it is definitely something that we’ve been wanting to do. It’s just that we want to wait until we get finished with Cobra Kai first before we get into that.”
“Cobra Kai: The Final Season – Part 1” is live on Netflix with Part 2 coming November 15th. The third part hasn’t set a specific date yet.
