The second season of “Star Trek: Prodigy” hit Netflix at the start of the month and so it’s a little early to know if the streaming giant will pick up the series for a third season.
CBS Studios funded the first two seasons, so Netflix was able to acquire them relatively cheaply – as opposed to a third season they’d have to entirely bankroll.
Even so, actress and former “Star Trek: Voyager” leading lady Kate Mulgrew has hope the show will be renewed. Talking about her appearance attending the show’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday morning, she tells Variety:
“I had a full auditorium on Sunday morning for the panel. They were thrilled. They were delighted! They’re desperate for this kind of television. I don’t think there’s anything quite like it on television now, because it’s teaching ‘Star Trek’ to a new generation to young children in an entirely novel way.”
The series, from creators Kevin and Dan Hageman, has received widespread praise for being accessible to families whilst still involving complex storylines and characters, Mulgrew praising the pair for the way it never speaks down to people: “[The Hagemans] don’t patronize anybody. They wouldn’t patronize a five-year old; they’re elevating the five year old.”
She also spoke about the current state of “Star Trek,” saying there’s no real limit to the number of shows the franchise can do:
“There will never be a saturation point, because there is never a saturation point for this kind of decency, this kind of excitement. This message is good, and it’s profoundly important. This is truly what we aspire to be, the best of ourselves. It sounds a little Pollyanna, but when it’s as beautifully created as ‘Prodigy’ is, and as the other shows are, it’s not Pollyanna at all. It’s how we should be behaving in this world.”
“Star Trek: Prodigy” does wrap up its storylines by the end of the second season, but the door is open for more adventures with the young crew if the streamer should pursue it.
All forty episodes of “Star Trek: Prodigy” are now available on Netflix.
