In the wake of her near-death overdose, a worried father tries to bond with his daughter by going on an impromptu road-trip to rehab. This is the emotional 1st trailer for Bleeding Love.
A cheery father (Ewan McGregor) and his distant daughter (Clara McGregor) bond while on a road trip, getting into various shenanigans along the way. However, after finding the Daughter drinking with a stranger, the Father grows angry. He reveals that 12 hours earlier, she nearly overdosed.
Bleeding Love (2023) – source: [Vertical Entertainment]The trailer then reveals the two are driving to rehab, and that the Father and Daughter have grown estranged due to the Father passing down his addiction genes and starting a new family elsewhere. With his Daughter’s life spiraling, the Father tries his best to make amends to the child he loves and left behind years before.
As someone with a family history of addiction, this trailer hits HARD. Stars Ewan McGregor and Clara McGregor beautifully play off their real familial bond, capturing the alternating sympathy and anger that comes with genetic addiction. Ewan McGregor has been a reliable character actor for generations, but whenever he’s allowed to flex his leading man muscles, he never fails to wow the audience with his skill. Daughter Clara impressively matches him beat for beat, showcasing a devil-may-care attitude with a volcanic resentment beneath the surface.
The bare-bones cinematography and set design adds to the film’s aesthetic, structured like a stage play so the actors can own the space with their acting alone. The trailer hints at a quiet expansiveness in the film’s world, showing the isolation and yearning for community that many recovering addicts crave. If the final movie matches the trailer’s quality, we could be witnessing a dark-horse Oscar contender.
Directed by Emma Westenberg, Bleeding Love will wide-release theatrically later this year following a limited release stateside in February 2024. The movie stars real-life father and daughter Ewan & Clara McGregor in the titular roles.
