By Whilst there’s a ton of visual effects in this week’s disaster film “Twisters,” one of the most talked about shots of the film involved no CG – just some water spray and a piece of basic clothing.
The scene in question sees Glen Powell’s Tyler Owens character leaving a farmhouse in the middle of the rain in a tight white t-shirt. Walking towards the camera, the shirt starts to become soaked.
It’s a bit of eye candy from Powell and causes audible reactions at screenings, even cheering. Universal has also been using it in the film’s marketing quite a bit.
However, filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung has revealed that the shot almost didn’t make the final cut. He tells The Wrap:
“You know, I tried to reduce that scene. I trimmed it down. And my editor at one point said, ‘You’re about to face a mutiny in this editing office. You have been requested to please restore the full length of that shot or else there will be a mutiny.’”
He tells EW the same thing, saying the entire editing staff “almost rioted” when he suggested trimming the shot.
Chung adds he didn’t plan the scene as something special, it just came out that way: “When I saw it on rolling on the monitor then I was realizing what I had just created.”
“Twisters,” with the intact scene, is now in cinemas.
