Harkening back to the Summer blockbusters of the 1990s has proven good for “Twisters,” the film is now exceeding projections by a considerable margin.
Boasting good critical reviews and a solid A- CinemaScore from audiences (the same as the 1996 original), the film reportedly pulled in $32.2 million on opening day on Friday (including $10M in previews).
As a result, the domestic weekend box-office projections have gone up to $74.6 million with some suggesting an $80 million opening is not out of the question.
The success, going by exit poll surveys, has been put on Universal’s marketing for the film that sold the movie as what it is – namely ‘fun and exciting’ escapism.
This has resulted in some interesting numbers – the film has been a hit with the under-35s, who account for nearly half the audience. Young women love the film in exit polls, but attendance-wise, they are the demo showing up the least.
It’s also a big film for couples and large groups of people, and is playing well in the red states. PLFs and Imax tickets are repping around 43% of the overall take.
“Longlegs” is still going strong with a second weekend of $11.7 million – down just 48% which is very good for an R-rated horror film. Not faring so well is “Fly Me to the Moon” which fell 66% in its second weekend with $3.2 million and in sixth place.
