For a show that is always seemingly getting canceled, there sure is a hell of a lot of Futurama about. Long may it continue. It has long since surpassed The Simpsons for both laugh quota and commentary on the human condition.
Starting over 25 years ago, Futurama tells the story of Philip J. Fry. While delivering pizza on New Year’s Eve 1999, he is accidentally cryonically frozen and thawed out one thousand years into the future.
The show hails from the creators of The Simpsons and it was first resurrected in 2007, then again in 2009, 2013, and 2017. It now returns for a twelfth full season and Hulu has premiered the official trailer.
The trailer shows that we will be visiting Bender’s ancestral robot village, dealing with A.I., and possibly understanding the true origins of coffee, all against the backdrop of a threat to the whole of planet Earth.
The series has already been renewed for another twenty episodes beyond this that will take the show into 2026.
This season features the returning voices of John DiMaggio, Billy West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr, and David Herman.
Futurama received critical acclaim throughout its run and was nominated for 17 Annie Awards, winning nine of them, and 12 Emmy Awards, winning six. It was nominated four times for a Writers Guild of America Award, winning for the episodes Godfellas and The Prisoner of Benda. It was nominated for a Nebula Award and received Environmental Media Awards for the episodes The Problem with Popplers and The Futurama Holiday Spectacular.
Futurama returns on July 29th.
