Friday evening results are in with Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s “Despicable Me 4” revised downward slightly from some overly lofty estimates earlier this week.
The latest outing of Gru and the Minions looks set to take in $23.4 million on Friday for a three-day total of $64.4 million on Friday-Sunday and a five-day holiday total of $112 million from Wednesday-Sunday.
The film had been tracking for a range of $110-120 million but some were suggesting it be $120 million or more, overly optimistic hope from the looks of it.
One limiting factor is this skews younger than a film like “Inside Out 2,” so likely won’t have as much draw in the late evenings.
The film has also broken some records – becoming Illumination’s twelfth title to open at No. 1 at the domestic box-office. Additionally “Despicable Me” holds the most No. 1 debuts of any animated franchise, just ahead of “Shrek”.
Don’t count Disney or Pixar out though as “Inside Out 2” is tracking for a $10.8 million haul on Friday, its fourth Friday. It’s looking at an estimated Friday-Sunday haul of $31.2 million and by end of Sunday will be at a domestic total of $535 million.
Currently charting 6% ahead of “Incredibles 2” at the same point in time (24 days), the movie looks likely to close out its domestic run somewhere around or above $650 million.
“A Quiet Place Day One” will come in third with $7.2 million for the Friday and a three-day haul of $22.2 million – a drop of 57% in its second weekend. By end of Sunday it should hit a domestic total of $95.5 million.
Ti West’s “MaXXXine” should come in fourth with $9.7 million for its starting weekend. “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” rounds out the tip five with $6.6 million for the three-day.
