By Comedic actor and musician Martin Mull has died, the actor passed away at his home last night after a long battle with illness. He was 80.
Mull’s daughter Maggie Mull broke the news on her Instagram on Friday, saying: “He was known for excelling at every creative discipline imaginable and also for doing Red Roof Inn commercials. He would find that joke funny. He was never not funny.” She adds he will be missed by her, his wife, friends coworkers, and “many, many dogs”.
Mull first became known as a musical comedian and songwriter in the early 1970s before his first major onscreen role on comedy soap “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” in 1976 before working on two spin-offs (“America 2-Night,” “Fernwood 2 Night”).
Plenty of TV and film work followed, including a notable role as Roseanne Conner’s gay boss (and later business partner) Leon Carp on the TV series “Roseanne”, as Principal Kraft in “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” and major TV roles on “Get a Life,” “Domestic Life,” “The Ellen Show,” and “Family Dog”.
For a whole generation he’ll always be remembered for his work as Colonel Mustard in 1985’s beloved cult classic “Clue”. Other notable film work included “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “Mr. Mom,” “Jingle All the Way,” “101 Dalmatians,” “Serial” and “Tim’s Vermeer”.
He had memorable TV guest starring or recurring roles on “Veep,” “Arrested Development,” “Taxi,” “The Golden Girls,” “The Larry Sanders Show,” “Wonder Woman,” “Reno 911!,” “Lois & Clark,” “Two and a Half Men,” “American Dad,””Danny Phantom,” “The War at Home,” “‘Til Death,” “Life in Pieces,” “Community,” “I’m Sorry” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” among many.
